The North Division Police, of RT Nagar police have arrested three persons and busted red Sanders smuggling racket and seized 502kg Red Sanders logs from their possession.
The accused has been identified as Abdul Basheer, 67, his wife Aneesa Fathima, 57 and their associate,Suhail Khan, 22.
Senior officer, told media persons,Alert police team on Sunday arrested three persons including an elderly couple who are part of the red Sanders smuggling racket.
The police have seized 502 kgs pf red Sanders logs which they were shifting from goods vehicle into their house situated in HMT layout in RT nagar at around 1 am.
Based on the tip off from the residents,Women police constable,Yellavva Mannanavar passed the information to Police sub inspector who was on night rounds reached the spot to confirm suspicious activity and alerted the senior officers about the information.
The police team rushed to the spot but the accused tried to hoodwink the police stating that they are shifting the house.
However police checked the house and recovered the red sander logs and took the trio into custody.
Inquiry revealed that the accused are part of the red sander smuggling racket run by couple son identified as Junaid who is presently on the run.
The accused would source the timber from their contacts in neighboring Andhra Pradesh and smuggle into the city.
The red Sanders logs then be sold to their contacts who in turn either smuggle to chennai from their they would shipped out of the country.
We suspect that it is a bigger racket and formed special team to track down the accused who are on the run. A case has been registered in RT Nagar police station and further investigation is on.
