Concerned over increasing begging nuisance commotion at traffic signal, City Police Commissioner,Kamal Pant,on Monday directed all the jurisdictional police across city to crack down on beggers and “other people” leading to traffic obstruction.

In a memo issued on Monday,Mr.Kamal Pant directed the city police to launch a drive jointly by traffic and law and order police to check on the menace.

Pant said the ACP rank officer will be the Nodal officer for the drive and will be supervised by Jurisdictional DCPs.

Though the memo directed to take action, but it was the discretion of the DCPs on the nature of the action.

The beggers create nuisance to the motorists who refused to pay alms,Mr.Pant said in a memo.

The memo was issued in the wake of concern raised by many residents in the last sanchara Samparka Divasa held on Sunday in Yelahanka.

The residents said that a superstition practiced commonly among the cab drivers of giving alms to transgenders as a token of good luck, has resulted in traffic jams at the major junctions and increasing in begging menance.

The resident asked Mr.Pant to take action against begging menace which is causing nuisance and also disrepute to the administration.

This is not the first time that the city police is cracking on begging menace.

In the year 2016,the City Police launched a special drive,Operation smile, led by the then Additional Commissioner,P Harishekharan against begging menace especially against those who were forcing children to beg at traffic junctions.
