After a gap of almost one year,the Bengaluru City Traffic Police decided to relaunch special drives on drunk and drive across the city,aiming to minimize fatal road accidents involving drunk driver’s.
Dr.BR Ravikanthe Gowda,Joint Commissioner of police,Traffic,told media persons,that the Drunk driving was stopped since march last year due to enforcement of Covid guidelines and also keeping in mind the safety of the traffic personnel.
However with the increase incidents and drunken driving cases it was decided to launch the drives with a set of guidelines,he said.
Giving point by point instructions,Ravikanthe Gowda,said that the alcometer devise used for the drive should be sanitised and kept in zip lock covers.
One equipment should be used for every single use and separate straws for every check .
Personnel involved in drunk driving checks should wear masks,gloves and face shield compulsory and should hand sanitize after every check.
After use,the equipments should be sanitized properly and should not be used for the next three days.
Traffic police should be sanitized in front of the motorists before check and also create awareness about sanitizations and its importance.
Personnel should be taken up with systematic planning and as per covid guidelines.
The drive was taken up to prevent fatal accidents and to check on drunk driving.Members of public should cooperate, Mr.Gowda added.
The decision to start Drunk and Drive special drives was in the wake of circular issued by Pratap Reddy,Additional Director General of Police,( law and order)recently directing the police to step up enforcement to minimize fatal road accidents.
Mr. Reddy had also given targets to the police on enforcement warning to take disciplinary action if the enforcement is not strictly implemented.
Apart from launching DD drives,Mr.Reddy asked the police to check incidents of rash and negligent driving,using mobile phones while riding and driving,not wearing helmets and seat belts,against vehicle without insurance and goods and public transport carrying excessive baggage and people.
The traffic police have also been directed to act against minor motorists and book cases against their parents.
The highway patrol and staff with interceptors should evict petty shops,hawkers,tender coconut sellers and puncture shops along the highway . This is to prevent road accidents,he added.
