Following a series of fatal road accident in and around the city,the city traffic police launched special drive,against rash and negligence driving continue to check unabated.

A cab driver and two of his passengers escaped narrowly when a high end car (porsche) driven by son of a city based businessman rammed into cab on old airport road on Saturday night.

Due to the impact the car toppled but the passengers and the driver escaped with minor injuries due to the airbags in the car.

The accused car after colliding with the cab also rammed into the compound wall of the command hospital before the car coming to halt.

The accused driver identified as Jaweri Mewani was taken into custody by Halasuru traffic police for questioning.

The police also seized the car and subjected him to medical examination to ascertain whether he is driving under the influence of alcohol.

Initial probe revealed that Javeri along with his friends had set out for joy ride with his friends after dining at a resturant in indiranagar.

The police are further questioning him to on the details of joy ride and about his accomplices.

The police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving,negligent act endangering lives of others against the driver.

It may recalled that two fatal accidents in Koramangala and electronic city flyover killing seven people including son of MLA and a couple in separate incidents,due to rash driving few days ago,shocked the residents.

Taking a strong exception traffic police relaunched special drives to check on rash wnd negligent driving and drunk driving.

The number of accidents and resulting fatalities significantly dipped in the city last year, according to data released by Bengaluru City Traffic Police on Saturday.

While 870 fatal accidents were reported in the city in 2018, the number dipped to 832 in 2019 and 657 in 2020.

One of the reasons for this could be the lockdown which extended for over three months, and subsequent restrictions on movement of vehicles for a prolonged period in 2020 due to COVID-19.

However,Dr.BR.Ravikanthe Gowda,Joint Commissioner (Traffic),said enforcement and hike in fines also had a role to play.

A reduction in accidents and drunken driving cases was recorded from the last few months of 2019 itself after the police launched enforcement drives.The police registered very few cases of accidents due to drunken driving last year — just 16.

Barricading at most street corners during 2020, also seemed to have helped traffic police in enforcement. They collected a whopping Rs.83.83 lakh by way of fines for traffic offences, one of the highest ever.

On Saturday night after resuming drunk and drive checks after a one and half year traffic police resumed checking drunk and drive through breath analyser or alcometer with all Covid precautions.

A special drive of drunk and drive check was conducted in all the 44 traffic police station limits across city with all Covid protocol was followed and around 52 persons booked for drunk and drive and their vehicles has been seized and driving licence will be sent to RTO for cancellation he added.
