As many as 100 convicts of the Central prison of Parappana Agrahara enrolled under a literacy program organised jointly by department of prison and correctional services and education department officials on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi on Saturday.
A survey conducted by the prison department found that out of 4800 inmates,a total 350 inmates are illiterate and do not know how to read and write,P Ranganath,Chief Superintendent of Prison told reporters.
The department has decided to celebrate the october 2 ,more meaningful way and to carry forward the message of the Father of the Nation.
A report has been submitted to the directorate of mass education,who consented with the project.
As part of the project,100 inmates (convicts) have been picked up and divided into a batch of ten.
These batches will be given one literate inmate (well educated graduate )to educate them for six months as per the guidelines of the saksharatha mission.
After completion of the batch,the trained inmates will be issued certificates from the department and will be asked to train the remaining inmates, Mr. Ranganath, told media persons.
