Environment protection is immediate priority: CM Bommai

The environmental damage caused in just the last 20 years is equivalent to the damage caused in 2000 years.

So we should consider environment protection as an immediate priority and act in this regard,Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

He was speaking at a function organised by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to release its annual report,a report on the environment in Bengaluru,’Parisara Vahini’, a publication and a documentary.

He suggested the Pollution Control Board to function as a part of the society to protect the environment.

The Board should create awareness among all sections of the society on best practices for environment protection among the children, youth, corporates and the government, Bommai said.

The Chief Minister wanted the Board to popularise simple ways for conservation and reuse of natural resources.

Garbage disposal is a major challenge in Bengaluru. About 60-65% of garbage  generated in the city is wet garbage.

Measures are being taken to convert it into manure, he said and instructed the Board to study and submit a report in this regard.

Speaking on the occasion Environment and Tourism minister Anand Singh said, the Board is functioning diligently 24X7 adopting modern technology to prevent environment pollution.

Chairman of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Dr Shanth A Thimmaiah and other senior officials were present.
