The Varthur police on Monday busted inter-state online Alexandrine Parakeet chicks sale racket and arrested two and rescued 26 chicks from them.
Based on a tip off,a team of police approached the accused identified as Bharath and Akshith posing as buyers and arrested them.
The accused told the police that they have source the consignment from their contacts in AP and Tamilnadu and selling it to their customers through online.
The rescued chicks have been handed over to Bannerghatta rescue centre.
These young hatchling are snatched from their nests exactly in January every year from the forests and sold through chennai across the country.
The trade is flourishing due to its demand in the market and the wildlife volunteers and police requested the members of general public not to buy.
Taking care of these birds is very expensive and requires a lot of care.A little negligence led to the death of chicks and trading and keeping it as pet is illegal protection of wildlife act,the police,said .
The parakeets are listed under Wildlife Protection Act,and cannot be in captivity,sold or trapped said a senior officer.
