Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday announced all high schools and colleges in the state will remain closed for the next three days as controversy over students wearing hijab on campus intensified, with violence reported from several districts.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has appealed to students to show restraint and maintain peace and harmony.
He was speaking to media persons in New Delhi after meeting Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal.
Replying to questions on implementing dress code in colleges in the state, he said, courts have delivered judgements in similar cases in various states.
Karnataka High Court too is hearing a petition on the dress code issue.The High Court would deliver a suitable verdict in accordance with the Constitution and Law.
Students would have to sit together to pursue their studies.Education is most important for their future.
Bommai appealed to the students to show restraint and maintain peace and harmony.It is a sensitive issue and nobody should indulge in issuing provocative statements.
Students should conduct themselves peacefully till the High Court delivers its judgement.
The Police department too had been instructed to maintain law and order.Nobody should try to disturb peace till the dress code issue is resolved,Bommai said.
Rejecting the opposition’s charge of failure against the government in handling the issue, Bommai said,as a ruling party we are discharging our duty to maintain peace and order.
State government has presented its stand on the dress code issue to the Court.Government is committed to the court verdict,Bommai said.
Boost for employment generation
The Chief Minister along with a delegation of State MPs met Union Industries minister Piyush Goyal and requested for production linked incentives for FMCG and Toys Cluster being set up in the state.
If approved it would give a boost for employment generation in the state,” Bommai said.
