New Delhi, 23nd May 2022: A dance evening, ‘In Search of Infinity’ was organized by Natya Vriksha in the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Center, New Delhi here on Saturday evening. The evening brought renowned dancer Geeta Chandran’s new work reflecting her internal dance journey through the pandemic. It was after two years that (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran presented her solo Bharatnatyam act in Delhi. She was ably supported by her musicians, Sharanya Chandran, K. Venkatesh, Manohar Balachandirane, Varun Rajasekhar, Sujit Nayak, and VSK Annadorai.
Geeta Chandran began her performance with Hindi poet Jai Shankar Prasad-ji’s Beeti Vibhavari Jaag Ri, which she used as a metaphor for the dark pandemic that we needed to put behind us, even as we embrace with abundant caution – a better tomorrow! Using dance images of a dry tree springing to life again, Geeta resurrected hope in the audience.
This exciting start to the dance evening was followed by an act where the episode of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Mountain to protect humanity became the context for Geeta to explore various nava-rasas in her dance. Here the dancer says that the pandemic made her plumb into the deepest recesses of her core to understand feelings of sorrow, wonder, disgust, and love. Verses in Sanskrit from the Sri Krishna Karna-amrita shlokam of Bilvamangala Swami become the libretto for this exploration in music and abhinaya.
