Abhijit Ray, Kolkata:The state government is handing over a portion of New Secretariat Building on Strand Road to Calcutta High Court. According to administrative sources, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hand over the keys to the 9th floor of New Secretariat Building’s Block B in a ceremony on August 25. Part of the City Sessions Court is to be shifted there. The Calcutta High Court brought the attention of the state government regarding the space constraint issue.In view of this, it has been decided to remove some offices from New Secretariat Building and give them for court work, according to official sources. Housing, Sports, Cooperatives, Tourism Department and Labor Tribunal are being shifted due to this transfer. During the rule of the Left Front government in the state, almost all government offices were run from Writers Building.But due to lack of space, the New Secretariat BuildingWrit was built on the banks of the Ganges. Several government offices were moved from Writers Building to New Secretariat Building. From the first floor to the seventh floor, the employees of several departments including housing, sports, cooperatives, tourism, labor tribunal sat. Important offices like State Housing, Public Health Engineering have been shifted to Rajarhat Newtown.However, according to the sources, several departments such as Labor and Cooperative Department will be managed from New Secretariat. On the other hand, the space from one to nine floors of New Secretariat has been handed over to the court authorities, but the rest will be in the hands of the state.
