Paddle Steamer Boats for Tourists in Calcutta

Abhijit Ray, Kolkata: A great gift for the people and tourists of Kolkata. The Calcutta Port Authority has renovated an old ‘paddle steamer’ to travel on the Ganges. This service started from the evening of Friday Panchami. This 1945 steamer built by Scotland’s Denny & Brothers was lying idle at Kolkata’s Khidirpur Dock for many years.Only students of Port Management Institute used to come for training on this steamer. The port authority through a private organization rehabilitated the boat and made it operational again. About seven crore rupees have been spent. Presently this is the only such active watercraft in the country, said Kolkata Port Authority Chairman Vineet Kumar. He said, from now on, through this paddle boat, tourists will be shown around the various historical places of Kolkata on the heritage tour of Kolkata Port. This time around Durgotsava there has been a great improvement in the tourism business. Many tourists have come not only from Bengal but also from other states and even from abroad.
