Tripura: ECI orders inquiry into Political Violence

The Election Commission of India has ordered an inquiry into the incident of political violence in the Jirania Sub Division of West Tripura District reported on January 18, 2023. The Election Commission of India has asked the Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura to obtain a report from DGP Tripura through the Chief Secretary, of Tripura and submit the report by 3 pm on January 20, 2023, CEO Kiran Gitte informed the media about this order Thursday.

Notably, violence erupted between the two groups of supporters of the ruling BJP and Congress in the Jirania sub-division. In the violence, several persons including AICC Tripura State in-charge Dr Ajoy Kumar sustained and injuries and were taken to the GB Hospital.

Reacting to the reported violence, Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Gitte held a press meeting in Agartala on Thursday and informed the media that Police took prompt action and eight persons were arrested, so far, in connection with the clash at Jirania on Wednesday (January 18).

The Congress and CPIM leaders – who are engaged in alliance talks against the BJP in Tripura – seized the opportunity and condemned the incident vehemently as well as reminded the EC about its assurance to hold violence-free elections in the State.

State secretary of CPIM, Tripura – Jitendra Choudhury criticized the BJP and demanded actions against the perpetrators. He and veteran CPIM leader Pabitra Kar also went to the Hospital to inquire about the health condition of Dr Ajoy Kumar.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman held a press conference after the attack and demanded the immediate arrest of the local MLA and a Minister and actions against the BJP-backed goons.

The State Election Department has launched Mission Zero Violence and started regular flag marches by the Central Para Military Forces in different areas including the Agartala city area.
