Today, Hyderabad: The construction of an iconic bridge across the Krishna River between the Telugu states is fast-tracked. It is known that the Union Ministry of Transport and National Highways had earlier decided to build a cable-stayed bridge connecting the two states at Somashila in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana. The related exercise has also started. As a part of that, it has already invited tenders for the expansion of roads connecting to the river. Rs.1,200 crore has been allocated to widen the 170 km national highway (from Kalvakurti in Telangana to Nandyala in Andhra Pradesh) in two rows. The bridge models have already been designed. The Center, which wants to make the bridge attractive to tourists, has taken another step in that direction. The Union Ministry of Transport and National Highways has recently issued an order establishing a special system for monitoring the construction of 170 kilometers of road construction works on both sides of the bridge along with the construction of the bridge. The Center is of the opinion that if the roads in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are constructed with different standards, there will be difficulties in connecting the bridge. It is in this context that a special system named Project Implementation Department has been established. The main purpose of its formation is to coordinate with the authorities of the two states. The Center has also started identifying officials who have experience in construction of national highways as well as cable-stayed bridges. Once the selection process of the officers is completed, the monitoring responsibilities will be handed over to this department. The process will be completed within the next few months,’ sources in the Union Ministry of Transport and National Highways said. The Ministry of National Highways has issued the latest order.
