On the one year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Putin addressed the Russian Federal Assembly for an hour and 45 minutes on Tuesday. He was sharply critical of Western countries. They are blamed for the long-lasting war. “We are not fighting the people of Ukraine. Just trying to maintain our existence. The people of Ukraine have become hostages in the hands of the Kiev government and the rulers of Western countries. The West is working for our defeat. Putin said that the West knows that it is impossible to defeat Russia on the battlefield. That is why they are accused of attacking the culture, religion, and values of their country. Putin did not mention the possibility of withdrawing his forces from Ukrainian territories in the latest speech. Out of the nuclear deal
Putin has announced that Russia is temporarily withdrawing from the ‘New Start’ nuclear agreement signed with the US in 2010. He stressed the need for his country to prepare for nuclear weapons tests. He said that the United States and the NATO countries have publicly announced that they want Russia to lose the war against Ukraine, so they have withdrawn from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This is the last nuclear deal in which Washington and Beijing are partners.
Developing North-South Transport Corridor
Putin said that they are developing the ‘North-South Transport Corridor’ so that new transport routes are available to further enhance trade cooperation with India, Iran, Pakistan and West Asian countries. He also said that ports will be built on the coasts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

What is the New Start Agreement?
It is an agreement between the US and Russia to limit/reduce the number of strategic nuclear weapons. In 2010, then US President Barack Obama and then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed it. According to this treaty, Russia and the US cannot deploy more than 1,550 nuclear warheads and more than 700 missiles and bombers. The teams of both countries can check whether the agreement is being implemented properly or not. In 2021, Russia and America decided to extend it till 2026. With Russia’s temporary withdrawal from it, the ban on nuclear weapons tests since the Cold War period seems to have stuck.
