Cracking down on over speeding motorists to minimise alarming number of accidents on Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway,the Ramanagara police on Tuesday deployed three mobile speed radar guns and booked around 44 vehicles crossing the permissible limits of 100 KMPH.
The violators have been booked and their licensed will be impounded and recommended to the RTO concerned to suspended their license too,Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police,traffic and road safety,told Media Persons.
As per the rules LMV vehicles have maximum speed limit of 100 KMPH while the heavy vehicles including trucks and buses have 60 KMPH.
In addition the police have proposed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials to ban movement of slow moving vehicles including two and three wheelers and tractors.These vehicles can use service road, he said .
people on social media objected and criticized the move stating that there was no point of calling it express way since the speed limit has been contained and the police have barricading every where.
This is also another way of fleecing money from the public,another twitter user,commented.
Clarifying the police stand,Mr.Alok Kumar said that the move is to contain over speeding of vehicle and enforce lane discipline .
People who travel in the newly assigned speed limit on the 118 kilometer stretch of the expressway can easily reach in one hour .
If the motorists accelerate to 120 speed there is a danger of accident and losing control study shows that Indian drivers are not skilled and the vehicles not equipped to maintain the speed for long due to many reasons,he said .
Due to this reason since the inception of the express way as many as 100 deaths reported and over 150 people severely injured out of total number of 308 accidents reported on express way since March 12 this year.
This is alarming and study by a team of police revealed that over speeding and lane discipline are two major factors causing accidents.
Deploying mobile speed radar guns at the strategic locations is only the temporary solution while the permanent solutions including installation of contactless AI based camears on the card.This needs some time for the approval procurement and installation process .
The mobile radar speed guns will soon be deployed at the other stretch of the expressway including Mandya and others parts based on the requirement .
This is function until permanent solution will be in place .Until then Radar guns to guard the speed as accidents keep happening and cant wait for anyone,a senior police officer, said .
