Eminent Mathematician Dr. CR Rao (102) passed away. He was in America and died due to illness.
Washington: India’s world-renowned statistician and mathematician Kalyampudi Radhakrishna Rao (CR Rao) (102) has passed away. He was in America. He died today due to illness. He received the highest award in the field of statistics for his services in mathematics. Government of India honored him with Padma Vibhushan.
Honor of Nobel in Statistics..
CR Rao has been awarded the International Prize of Statistics 2023, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field, for seeding revolutionary ideas in the field of statistics less than 75 years ago. He received this award this year at the age of 102 years. CR Rao’s research paper published in Kolkata Mathematical Society in 1945 was awarded this award. The International Prize in Statistics Foundation said in a statement that his work still has a profound impact on science.
All childhood in AP..
CR Rao was born on September 10, 1920 in Hadagali, Bellary district in a Telugu family. Later he spent his childhood in Guduru, Nujiveedu and Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh. He did M.Sc in Mathematics from Andhra University and MA in Statistics from University of Kolkata. He completed his PhD in 1948 from King’s College, Cambridge University. Joined the Indian Statistical Institute as a student and rose to become the director of the same institution. He celebrated his hundredth birthday on September 10, 2020. After retiring as the director of the Indian Statistical Institute, he settled in America and served as a research professor at the University of Buffalo.
The scientists who participated in the recent webinar stated that his services, who are the founders of CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science in Hyderabad, are useful not only in the field of statistics but also in the fields of economics, genetics, anthropology etc. He has received 39 doctorates from 19 countries and has submitted 477 research papers so far. Wrote 15 books. In 2002, he was awarded the country’s highest National Medal of Science by the hands of US President George Bush. Served as president of UK International Statistical Institute, Institute of Mathematical Science and International Biometric Society. Professor Rao was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1968 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001 by the Government of India in recognition of his services to the field of Indian Statistics.
Research by CR Rao.
CR Rao analyzed three basic findings in 1945 as part of his research. These paved the way for modern statistical methods and led to the widespread use of these statistical tools in science. The first of these three is the Cramer-Rao lower bound. It represents the best way to estimate statistical quantity. Second is the Rao-Blackwell theorem. A prediction can be used to improve. The third is the development of a new interdisciplinary field for the breadth of information geometry. It helps to extract information from data more efficiently.
