BMP chief engineer C M Shivakumar (45),a victim of the fire breakout on August 11 at the civic body’s Quality Assurance Laboratory, succumbed to “sepsis with refractory septic shock” and “multiple organ dysfunction syndrome” at around 6:59 pm Wednesday at a private hospital in Bengaluru.
Shivakumar is survived by his wife Uma Maheshwari and daughters Vibha Nidhi (12) and Nirvi Neha (10).He had also received 25 percent burn injuries along with inhalation injuries.
A statement by the hospital said, “Mr. C M SHIVAKUMAR 45 Years male,came to our hospital with alleged history of accidental thermal burns and sustained burns injury to bilateral upper limbs, chest, face and neck (diagnosed as 25 % burns with inhalational injury,ARDS with Type II Respiratory Failure with high Fio2 requirement, Sepsis with septic shock).
Patient took initial treatment at an outside hospital and later he was referred to our hospital in view of severe hypoxia, hypercarbia,anaemia,thrombocytopenia, sepsis with septic shock,AKI and Grade-3-4 burns injury.”
A native of Nanjangud, Shivakumar was appointed as the assistant executive engineer of the BBMP in 2005.
However,he later went on to become the chief engineer of the BBMP’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance Division.
Sivakumar’s body will be taken to Victoria Hospital for a post-mortem examination,following which,it will be taken to his residence in Rajarajeshwarinagar.
On Thursday, the mortal remains will be taken to Nanjangud for the final rites.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,taking to social media, said, “Saddened to hear the news of the death of CM Shivakumar,Chief Engineer of Quality Control and Quality Assurance Department, who was seriously injured in the fire incident at the Quality Control Laboratory of BBMP. I pray that the soul of the deceased may rest in peace and his family may find strength to bear the grief.”
Deputy Chief Minister,DK.Shivakumar expressed his condolences.He said:I am saddened by the death of Shivakumar. I visited him a few days ago and his condition was critical.I pray to the almighty to give strength to the family to bear the loss.”
Shivakumar and junior engineer Jyoti, 26, were shifted to Apollo hospital, Seshadripuram, on August 21 from Victoria Hospital. While Shivakumar suffered 25% burns, Jyoti suffered 28% burns. Following the accident, all nine injured persons were admitted to the ICU in Trauma and Emergency Care Centre at Victoria Hospital that is affiliated to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute.Shivakumar was diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
Condoling the death of Shivakumar,BBMP Chief commissioner Tushar Girinath said,I express deepest condolences to the family of Shivakumar.
It is an irreparable loss.Beyond the financial package, the civic body will discuss with the state government to announce a special package for his family.”
The police meanwhile continued investigations and questioned the lab staff and BBMP employees to ascertain if there is foul play.
The police also awaits the report from FSL and electrical inspectorates to ascertain the actual reason behind the mishap .
