Skyrocketing electricity prices

The sale prices of electricity in the country are skyrocketing. States like Telangana are paying high prices for continuous supply without imposing cuts.

The average unit selling price in August was Rs 6.89,
a 33 per cent increase compared to 2022,
the Energy Exchange of India report said.

 

Today, Hyderabad: Selling prices of electricity in the country are skyrocketing. States like Telangana are paying high prices for continuous supply without imposing cuts. Telangana electricity distribution companies (discoms) bought from the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) even after setting a maximum price of Rs.10 per unit at certain times of the day from 5th to 31st of last month. A total of 886.50 crore units of electricity were purchased by all state discoms in the exchange in August 2023. To this extent, compared to August 2022, IEX revealed that sales have increased by 21 percent in the same month of this year in the latest report given to the Central Electricity Department. It said that the national average selling price of electricity in the month of August was Rs.6.89 per unit. Compared to the same month last year, the average selling price has increased by 33 percent. The Central Electricity Department recently announced that the increase in sales by 21% and price by 33% in one month is one of the world records.

Why increased…

The exchange revealed that August 2023 saw the least rainfall since August 1901, which led to an unprecedented increase in electricity demand. 15,200 crore units of electricity were consumed across the country in the month of August. This consumption is 16 percent higher than the same month of the previous year. Even in daily consumption, 512.60 crore units were recorded on August 31. This is also the highest in the history of the country.

  • Total consumption of 781.87 crore units was recorded in August 2023 in Telangana. Out of this, 173.29 crore units were bought and supplied to the public by spending Rs.1,132 crore in the exchange. Telangana state consumption in August 2022 is 625.38 crore
