Kolkata:In West Bengal, the opposition party BJP has been repeatedly accused of playing divisive and caste politics.
Today BJP opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and his other party members allegedly called a turban-clad Sikh police officer ‘Khalistani’ on their way to Sandeshkhali.
West Bengal Chief Minister,Mamata Banerjee condemned the BJP workers’ remarks and shared a video on her X (formerly Twitter) handle in which a Sikh police official from her state was heard accusing Bharatiya Janata Party cadre of calling him a ‘Khalistani’.
Jaspreet Singh, the senior IPS officer who was deputed at Dhamakhali to prevent Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP party workers from visiting restive Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, got agitated after a group of activists of the saffron party allegedly hurled the ‘Khalistani’ jibe at him.
This is quite normal practise for BJP to play politics based on religion & caste.
Today, BJP workers including Suvendu Adhikari, Shankar Ghosh,Agnimitra Paul were stopped at Dhamakhali on their way to Sandeshkhali.
At the same time,Section 144 was imposed in 12 places of Sandeshkhali.Later,Suvendu and Shankar entered Sandeshkhali with the permission of the Calcutta High Court.
A scuffle broke out between BJP workers and police in Dhamakhali. The BJP workers allegedly called Superintendent of Police Jaspreet Singh a Khalistani.
The concerned police officer strongly protested and heard saying,”I will take action on this.Just because I am wearing a turban, you are saying this.
If I was not wearing a turban, would you call me a Khalistani? You cannot say this about my religion.”
Meanwhile, members of the Sikh community have called for “Gherao” of the BJP headquarters in Kolkata in protest.
