Beware of QR Code Fraud sent through’registered post’ promising rewards and gift vouchers says police

he city police launched an online campaign to create awareness warning members of general public about the unsolicited registered posts promising cash rewards and gift vouchers with QR code to trap the victim.

This is an advanced method of cyber frauds after SMS and random calls from the scamsters,Kushal Chouksey,Superintendent of Police,Chikkaballapura District,part of the online campaign explained elaborating on the scam,the scamsters with a fake identity send registered posts to ransom people claiming to be from a online shopping company.

The letter contain details of the scheme with scratch card with cash reward of ₹ 12.8 lakh and QR code to scan to claim the reward .

The letter also contains a form to seek personal details along with details of IDs and bank account.

As soon as the QR code is scanned the bank account is access to the bank account credentials and the money will be withdrawn online.

The accused would also share the mobile numbers to contact and clarify doubts.The police verified the mobile numbers and the sender address forging the online company details which were found be to fake .

The city police circulating the awareness message along with the copy of the registered letter received by a man identified as Rudresh LS from Chikkamagaluru.

This is a scam and we want people to be alert and not to respond to such unsolicited messages or posts,Mr. Chouksey,told reporters.

We also urged the people to have multiple verification system at their mobile phones for security reasons and not to involve in any transactions or share personal details with unknown people .

He even said the scam involves fake messages about reward points expiring,after which victims are asked to click on a link and download an APK file,which eventually gives scamsters access to sensitive information such as banking credentials.
