Steps to build a huge hydropower station

are alarm bells for India

Internet Desk: Neighboring China continues to spew venom against India whenever it gets a chance. Provocations continue to be carried out in strategic areas. Although India knows that it will be a loss.. a huge hydropower station (super dam) is ready to be built on the Brahmaputra river. The matter has been stagnant for the past few years. But, it seems that China is taking steps in that direction once again. To this extent, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has released a report. Alarm bells rang about the looming threat to India.

What did the ASPI report say?

ASPI has included key points related to China’s moves in its report. Before entering India, the Brahmaputra river bends in a crescent shape. China is taking steps to build a project in this curved area. The river, on the other hand, flows down about 3,000 meters before entering the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. If the project is built here, it will be geographically suitable for China. China hopes to build the project here as it can generate more electricity at a lower cost. Dragon describes it as the most powerful hydroelectric project in the world.

What is thirty for India?

The Brahmaputra River (known as Yarlung Jambo in Tibet) originates in Tibet and flows through India into Bangladesh. There it meets the Ganges. Brahmaputra is very important for North Eastern states of our country. There is an agreement between India and China on the flow rate, distribution and quality of this river water. The Brahmaputra floods heavily during the monsoon season. Especially in Bangladesh, they cause huge damage. According to the agreement, from May 15 to October 15, the hydrological matters of the Brahmaputra should be shared between upstream China and downstream India.

River levels should be communicated to downstream countries especially when there is a possibility of flooding. But, after the tensions between the two countries increased, China did not give that information to India properly. For the first time, an agreement was signed between the two countries on the Brahmaputra waters in 2002. After that in 2008, 2013 and 2018 changes were made according to the conditions at that time. The last agreement was concluded in 2023. A new agreement was not reached after that due to tensions between the two countries. It is disturbing that China is preparing to build the project at this moment.

As a water bomb..

If China completes this project, there is a danger of becoming a pawn for India. China will have an opportunity to divert Brahmaputra water during summer. Due to this, the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh may face water crisis. On the other hand, the Brahmaputra has a heavy flow of water during the monsoon season. If a large quantity of water is released at once.. the lower areas will get flooded. The project that China wants to build is just 30 km away from the India-China border. Therefore, India has problems in terms of defense as well. In case of war situations, there is a risk that China will release the water in the project at once and use it as a ‘water bomb’.
