New Delhi: A US-based NASA analysis has shown that enough water is contained in the outer layer (crust) of the planet Mars to create vast oceans on its surface. Because the water is several kilometers below the surface, it cannot be extracted and used for future human habitation, NASA said. This conclusion was reached after analyzing the data sent by NASA’s lander ‘In Sight’ from 2018 to 2022. Mars is half the size of Earth. If the water in the crust is brought out, a two kilometer deep ocean will form across the planet. 300 million years ago this water seeped into the crust of Mars. At that time, Mars’ magnetic field disappeared and solar wind waves destroyed the atmosphere, causing much of the water on the surface to evaporate and merge into space. However, most of the water has penetrated to a depth of 11.5 to 20 km in the outer layer of Mars. Some of the water has frozen as ice at the poles of Mars. On earth itself we cannot dig a hole more than a kilometer deep. So expelling the water from the womb of Mars is not a feasible task.
