Sudha Murthy Internet Desk: Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty has clarified that the story she shared about Raksha Bandhan was criticized. He explained that his intention was to convey the stories of the Rakhi festival that he had learned as a child.
Yesterday, Sudhamurthy X shared a video explaining the importance of the festival saying that Raksha Bandhan has a rich history. In the 16th century, when Queen Karnavati of Chitodgarh was in danger, she asked the Mughal emperor Humayun for help, and since then, the Rakhi tradition began. It has been heavily criticized. With that, she posted another post on the net. “This is one of the stories I learned about Rakshabandhan. This is definitely not the origin of the festival. My intention here is to tell you one of the stories I learned as a child to symbolize the festival. This ancient tradition has undergone many changes over time according to our culture. Sudhamurthy explained that I like this festival with my siblings.
What did she say about Rakhi?
“This day of tying Rakhi on brother’s hand is one of the most important festivals for me. The role of siblings is very important in our lives. This rakhi is the thread that binds a sister with the assurance that her brother will stand by her when she is in trouble. This tradition started in the 16th century. Rani Karnavati’s empire was very small. One day her kingdom is invaded. She was in danger. Not knowing what to do, she sent a small thread to the Mughal Emperor Humayun. She said that she was in danger and wanted to save her as a sister.
But, Humayun did not understand the gist of that thread. After asking the local people, they explained to the emperor that this is a call from a sister asking for help from her brother and that is the tradition here. Humayun immediately left for Karnavati’s kingdom to help her. There were no such things as airplanes at that time.. they went on horseback. But it was already too late. She is not alive. But, since then the tradition of Rakhi has continued. On this day (Raksha Bandhan), women no matter how far away they go to their brothers and wash Rakhi,” Sudhamurthy explained in the video.
