State-wide crackdown on defective number plates nets nearly 10,000 cases from Bengaluru alone:

In the last two weeks special drive against defective number plates the police booked 19.448 cases out of which 9.800 cases have registered in blore city alone,this according to the police is to streamline booking traffic violations online.

In a special drive launched against defective number plates,traffic police across the state booked a total of 19,448 cases in the last 22 days out of which Bengaluru city traffic police 9,684 cases which is highest among the 37 districts .

The whole exercise according to the police is to  streamline the online traffic enforcement system where defective number plates hindering to track down vehicles and issue notice to the actual vehicles .

This is the biggest problem the city police is facing while recording violations online for which special drive has been launched earlier to track down the offenders and register FIR against them too.

Alok Kumar,ADGP,traffic and road safety said  motorists with defective or without number plates, used to dodge law enforcement authorities in Traffic violations and  Road accident cases and even for committing crime. “Defiance of law and manipulation must be dealt with firmly”, he added .

In October 2023,the Bengaluru Traffic Police launched a special drive to track down vehicles with defective or masked registration plates.

The drive was in response to motorists using fake number plates to avoid detection by police,who are increasingly using contactless enforcement.

The police formed special teams to investigate and track down vehicles based on complaints received on social media.

The police during the special drive 1,13,517 people for using defective number plates and collected a total fine of Rs.184.83 crore fines.

Police also registered 22 criminal cases against people who deliberately masked their registration plates. According to the MV Act,defaulters can face a penalty of up to Rs.5,000.

If a vehicle has a false number plate or missing digits or letters, the police can seize the vehicle and register a criminal case.

However the menace continue unabated as the  traffic police resorted to contactless fine and installed advanced CCTV cameras at the strategic locations across the city to record the violations .

This problem extended to the other parts of the state and vehicle plying on highways started masking the registration plates either with dirt or with sticker or piece of cloths to hoodwink enforcement cameras.

BTP had earlier in October 2023 launched a special drive against defective number plates and even booked 22 FIRs against vehicle owners who had deliberately tried to mask their number plates.

Bengaluru was followed by Mysuru city with 634 cases, Mangaluru city with 550 cases,Belagavi city with 527 cases and Hubballi-Dharwad with 405 cases.

However,the menace continues unabated
special drive against defective number plates,the Karnataka police have booked 19,448 cases across the State over the last three weeks Of them,9,684 cases were booked in Bengaluru only, the highest for any district in the State.

In order to counter this,the district police put up check points and intensified highway patrolling to identify or check on offenders,Mr.Kumar,said.

Joint Commissioner of Police, traffic,MN Anucheth,said with the physical checks relaunched the traffic police focus on defective number plates and other violations also.
