Canada: The Canadian government is preparing to impose more restrictions on foreign students and workers.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ( Justin Trudeau ) made an announcement on the latest restrictions. “Compared to last year, this year we will issue 35 percent less study permits to foreign students. Next year this number will be reduced by another 10 percent. Although migration is beneficial for the economy of our country.. some evil forces are misusing this system. That’s why we have to control them,” said Trudeau.
According to the data of the Immigration Department, study permits were issued to 5,09,390 foreign students in 2023. In the first seven months of this year, 1,75,920 people were allowed. Further, the Trudeau government has announced that it will also impose restrictions on work permits for foreign workers and partners of students.
Elections will be held in Canada next year. The Liberal government led by Trudeau is lagging behind in the surveys conducted in this order. There is a lot of criticism from the locals that unemployment is increasing due to migration. Apart from this, there is also a huge shortage of houses in the country. With this, the Trudeau government took corrective measures and started reducing the number of temporary residents. According to statistics, the number of temporary residents in Canada has doubled in two years. While there are 14 lakh people in 2022, the number has increased to 28 lakh by the middle of 2024. Canada has already announced that it will limit the number of temporary residents to 5 percent of the country’s population.
What is the impact on Indians?
However, the latest decision will have an impact on Indian students. Indians make up the largest number of foreign students studying in Canada. 41% of all study permits issued in 2022 were owned by Indian students. According to the statistics released by the Government of India last month, 13.35 lakh students are studying abroad, of which 4.27 lakh are studying in Canada. It is noteworthy that between 2013-2022, the number of Indian students going to Canada has increased by 260 percent.
