Delhi: 120 people, including environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who were coming to Ladakh for a rally demanding sixth schedule and statehood, were detained by the police at the Delhi border on Monday night. With this, they all started an indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday in the police stations where they were detained. Wangchuk started the ‘Delhi Chalo Padayatra’ from Leh on 1st of last month under the leadership of Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). Adding Ladakh to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution gives it the power to make laws to protect the local population, their land and cultural identity. Sonam Wangchuk revealed on X platform that the police detained her. “Me and 150 hikers were detained by a thousand policemen. We don’t know what our future holds,’ he said in the post. Meanwhile, a public interest litigation was filed in the Delhi High Court challenging Wangchuk’s detention. But the court which refused to hear it on Tuesday approved to hear it on Thursday afternoon. Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul said in ‘X’ that the detention of Wangchuk is unacceptable. BJP objected to Congress’s condemnation of Wangchuk’s detention. Criticized that their affair was full of hypocrisy.
