Haveri:Former Chief Minister and MP Basavaraj Bommai urged the state government to conduct a survey of the rain damage and announce relief as quickly as possible.
On Monday,Bommai visited the Kanakapura village in Haveri taluk, where the Tunga Upper Bank Canal had broken, causing complete crop destruction. He inspected the washed-away canal.
Later,he told reporters that there has been heavy rainfall across the state, and in the last ten days, the rainfall has been above normal.Thousands of houses have been flooded and damaged.Farmers’ crops have been lost.
Significant damage has also occurred in Haveri district, especially to crops along the banks of the Varada River. Due to the incomplete UTP (Upper Tunga Project) works, water from streams is flowing into the canal. This is a result of the government’s negligence.
He demanded that the government should immediately announce relief for the rain damage. The survey of the rain damage must be conducted properly by the government.Funds available with the district administration should be utilized for this purpose.
There is Rs.18 crore in emergency funds, which should be used immediately.I have discussed the rain damage with the district commissioner.
The available funds should be released without delay; the emergency relief funds should not be withheld unnecessarily. The rain damage assessment must not be done superficially,”he added.
The former CM said in the UTP canal, steel should be used for the underground channel and only then can the canal be saved.
Temporary measures should be taken to prevent water from entering the canal, followed by a permanent solution.
Earlier, our BJP government gave double compensation to farmers. The current government must work to provide justice to the farmers.
The state government’s negligence is the direct cause of the damage caused by the rain disaster in Haveri district.
At the same time, he also urged the government to release the caste survey report as soon as possible.
