The Girinagar police have arrested a 40-year-old inter-state chain snatcher involved in as many as 157 cases in different parts of the country.
The accused Achuth Kumar alias Gani,40,a native of Dharwad,was track down in Charlapalli prison in Telaganga where he was arrested for attempting to snatch a chain from a woman and caught by alert public.
Senior officer told reporters,Achuth Kumar on 19th august this year,approached a home maker by knocking the door and calling her husband name which he read it on the name plate.
As soon as the victim opened the door the accused overpowered the victim,snatched her chain and escaped.
The accused had followed the victim who had visited the temple near her house .
Based on the complaint,the Girinagar police tracked down the accused and brought him to the city on body warrant .
A detailed investigation led the police to recovered 310 grams of stolen gold ornaments and a two-wheeler used in the crime.
The total value of the recovered goods was ₹ 24.15 lakh, the police said.
Explaining the modus operandi,Police Inspector Satish Kumar,said that the accused would move around the residential area on his motorcycle wearing full fake helmet to do recce to identify the target.
He would also identify the entry and exit as escape routes.
After robbing the gold he would dump the bike in isolated place and stay at his friend’s house and hide the valuables in the house without their knowledge .
He would later return after few days pick up the valuables and sell it to the pawn brokers.With the money the accused blow on vices and also buy second hand bikes to commit the next offence to hoodwink the police.
