Puducherry:The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) Regional Centre in Puducherry has been a beacon of cultural revival and scholarly excellence in the region. Since its establishment, the Centre has been instrumental in preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage, particularly focusing on rare and traditional art forms.

A Pivotal Role:

Since 2017 the Centre has organized numerous academic and cultural initiatives, including seminars, conferences, performances, and exhibitions.

These events have shed light on various aspects of India’s cultural heritage, especially in the Southern regions.

Remarkable Achievement:

The Puducherry Regional Centre boasts a remarkable collection of historic puppets, including rare examples made from goat skin dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, some over 300 years old.

The collection, consisting of 94 puppets, was curated from the renowned National Awardee for Puppet Performance,Sri Rajappa, and his wife,Kalaimamani Sundari.

These puppets are celebrated for their intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance, showcasing traditional puppet-making techniques.

This rich collection highlights the deep artistic and cultural heritage of the region. It stands as a testament to Puducherry’s dedication to preserving its vibrant puppet traditions.

Infrastructure Development and Challenges:

In 2020,the Centre relocated to a 2,000-square-foot facility at the Art and Craft Village in Murungapakkam. This move, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, presented significant challenges.

However,the Centre’s dedicated staff successfully established a fully functional workspace,including a library,office spaces,and exhibition areas.

Presidential Visit and Future Endeavors:

In August 2023,the President of India Draupadi Murmu visited the Centre, recognizing its significant contributions to the cultural landscape.

This visit further highlighted the Centre’s importance and its potential to become a permanent institution in Puducherry.

The Centre’s future plans include expanding its reach through collaborative projects with international organizations, nurturing young scholars, and preserving India’s rich heritage for future generations.

Government Support Needed:

While the Centre has made significant strides, it requires the support of the Puducherry Government to establish itself permanently. This would ensure the continuation of its vital work in promoting and preserving India’s cultural heritage.
