Private Hospital Psychiatrist Doctor sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with 1 Lakh rupees fine for stealing new born baby boy from BBMP hospital to sell
The 50th Additional city and session court on Monday convicted a 35-year-old psychologist working at a private hospital on Bannerghatta road and sentenced her to undergo 10 years imprisonment and a fine of rupees one lakh for stealing a new born baby boy from a BBMP hospital in Chamarajpet to sell it to the mother of her patient for a price of ₹15 lakh.
It was a meticulous plan hatched by Rashmi,who was practicing in private hospital in Hubballi who lured the mother of one of her patient identified as Anupama Desai and offered to get a baby through Surrogacy .
The accused even got Anupama’s husband to get tests and collected his semen samples and borrowed the money on the pretext of medical expenses.
But it was to hoodwink the couple and to take the money to repay her personal and home loan in 2019 .
When even after one year when Rashmi failed to get the baby,The couple started pressuring Rashmi and threatened to file a police complaint,prompting her to come to Bengaluru and searched all the government hospital for a week asking poor parents of the new born babies to sell their babies .
When nothing materialised,she decided to steal the baby and as per the plan,she visited the Chamarajpet hospital and stole the baby boy and walked away.
Husna Banu,mother of the baby boy was shocked and created ruckus as her baby was stolen from the hospital two hours after he was born.
She had taken all precautionary measures and even wore mask and scarf to hide her identity before walking into the hospital and walking out with the baby .
The shocked parents filed a complaint and the case made headlines as the new born baby from the hospital was stolen during covid time amidst security at the hospital .
The case did not seen any progress even after six months prompting the department to suspend the Investigating officer before transferring the case to Basavanagudi women police station.
The case was handed over to PSI,KR Srinivas,who gathered call details of nearest tower dump of 1,500 phone calls and over 500 CCTV footage having sub standard quality .
After verifying hundreds of photos from the CCTV footages were enlarged to get a small clue of the mobile phone model which was compared with the CDR details .
The photos of the mobile number owner was collected which was matched with few similarities .
The team further analysed the call record details and found that many phone calls were made to Anupama’s number .
The police checked the Anupama’s mobile number and found that she had put the photo of the stolen baby in DP as it was his birthday.
The baby’s picture was further corroborated with the actual parents and after confirmation,the police rushed o Anupama;s house and rescued the baby.
The police did not pressed any charged against Desai couple as they were made to believe that they got the baby through surrogacy and with all legal formalities .
Appreciating the good piece of investigations,the IO,PSI , KR.Srinivas was awarded chief minister medal .
