New Delhi -Energy’Delhi Essay writing competition for children was organised at R.D. Modern PublicSchool, Rajeev Bihar Galini- 5b G.D. colony, Delhi, as part of a nation-widecampaign to generate awareness about importance of energy and to dispel themisconceptions related to nuclear energy.The topic of the competition was ‘ Nuclear Energy – Nation’s Energy’ and it wasorganised on behalf of Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), a Governmentof India undertaking. In all, around 260 students participated in the competition. The students’ work wasjudged by eminent personalities.The winning students were:Winner I- . Niharika Saxena 6thWinner II- Sakshi Singh- 8thThe school principal Mr. Rajesh K. Shah said on the occasion that children’sexpressions are an indication of their creativity. The children had portrayed theimportance of energy in a very creative manner and had also showed how theproduction of electricity from nuclear energy does not harm the environment. He alsogave away prizes to the winning students. The judges also appreciated the work of theyoung students and said this would increase awareness about science and energy.On this occasion comics based on Budhiya, a fictional character who motivatesvillagers to support nuclear power, were distributed among the students. The characterhas been created by Mr. Amritesh Srivastava, Media Manager, NPCIL, and theinitiative has won several awards for its simplicity and effectiveness. A special three-part animated film on the same character was also screened.Many such programmes are being organised in states across India with an objective ofcreating awareness about nuclear power as a clean, pollution-free energy source andalso removing dispelling myths and misconceptions about nuclear energy. In India, currently nuclear power generation amounts to 6780 MW and is planned toreach 13,000 MW by the year 2023.
